Award-winning singer-songwriter Laura Hill makes her highly anticipated return with Space for You, a captivating new single that explores the beauty of vulnerability and connection. Drawing from deeply personal experiences, Hill delves into the concept of "holding space"—a bit like holding an awkward bucket for someone to emotionally and verbally unload into, but doing it with love and no judgment.
Musically, Space for You is an enchanting blend of folk, soul, and pop, evoking the tender lyricism of Julia Jacklin and the warm swagger of The Teskey Brothers. Featuring live-tracked instrumentation and emotive production, the song takes listeners on a journey, inviting them to sway gently or bust out a slow dance in the kitchen, car, or under a disco ball.
“Most of us are trying to understand or navigate something internally,” says Hill. “Holding space for someone is about creating a small corner of your heart where they can share their feelings without judgment, while also being mindful of your own emotions. It’s messy, sometimes awkward, but always worth it.”
Recorded at Wundenberg’s Studios with engineer Lewis Wundenberg and mixed by producer Mario Spate at Danger Deer Recording Studios, the track captures the synergy of a live band session. Hill was joined by some of South Australia’s most talented musicians: Andreanna Massacci (drums), Bree Tranter (keys), Joshua Morphett (guitars), and Milush Piochaud (bass).
Laura reflects, “The energy of tracking live is magical—you never know what’s going to happen, but when it clicks, it’s like catching lightning in a bottle. Everyone held space for me, and I’m so grateful for the care and talent they brought to this track.”
Lyrically conversational, Space for You features a push-pull narrative complemented by dynamic instrumentation. A standout moment occurs when the music pauses on the words “hold space,” only to be lifted by a soulful drum fill—a sonic nod to the delicate art of balancing emotions and the occasional emotional stumble.
With its soulful sincerity and shimmering production, Space for You invites listeners to reflect on their own capacity to hold space for others—and for themselves.
